Whether you’re new to online dating or a seasoned expert, one thing that’s pretty common across the board is that people really dislike writing their personal dating profiles.
Many feel it takes too long and they just want to skip to the part where they can view or connect with others. Or perhaps they’re not sure what to say and don’t feel comfortable ‘selling’ themselves.
While writing your profile can be time consuming for some, it’s incredibly important to get it right. After all, this is what any potential date or future partner will be reading to determine whether they feel you’re a good match for them, so it deserves a bit of effort.
Here are some simple tips for those struggling with writing their online dating profiles:
1. Get in the right head space
Think about looking for a new partner like you would a new job. You don’t apply for jobs without writing a good resume that covers off all your finest points do you? So get to work on your personal CV to give yourself the best chance possible.
2. Be genuine and honest
It can be tempting to embellish points about yourself to make you sound more attractive (e.g. saying you’re fluent in French or a yoga expert), but this will only work against you in the long run. You want people to know the real you, and honesty really is the best policy here.
3. Get a friend to help
It can be hard to blow your own trumpet sometimes and let’s face it, who knows you better than your friends? So get a mate on board with the task to make it easier and more fun. Or even better yet, if you’re using a site like Date My Friend, then your friend gets to take care of writing your whole profile for you!
4. Spend time on it
Don’t try and rush through the process, take the time to really think about your qualities, interests and what kind of partner you’re looking for. Then once you’ve written your profile, leave it for a day and come back to it with fresh eyes for a final check.
5. Don’t obsess over it
While you should put the effort into your profile, don’t fall into the trap of spending too much time thinking, perfecting and constantly changing it or you’ll never get it up and yourself out there! A good hour or two initially is a good guide, with then updates or edits as you navigate your way in the world of online dating.
Remember it’s never too late to change your profile either, so if you find you’re attracting the wrong people or it’s not working for you, then maybe it’s time to give it another go.
Good luck!
